Wedding Cakes: Wedding cakes are a joyous tradition around the world. In many cultures, some type of decorated confection is served to symbolize fertility and luck, and to allow ell wishers to share the good fortune of the happy couple. According to confectionary tradition, wedding cakes in the United States are butter or sponge cake, and the top tier is frozen until the couple’s first anniversary. One wedding cake custom, however, has changed dramatically: The cake no longer has to be all white. Today’s cakes may be decorated to match a theme, the bride’s dress, various colors, and reflections of the location of the reception/ceremony. Groom’s Cake: So many things at weddings and receptions are focused solely on the Bride. To recognize the Groom, many weddings add a Groom’s Cake to the reception menu.
Most sources point to the birth of the groom’s cake-originally a fruit cake but now often a rich, chocolate confection-as a tastier alternative to the pure white wedding cake. At more elaborate celebrations, slices of the sturdier groom’s cake were boxed at mementos of the occasion for the departing guests. Legend had it that if a young maiden put a slice of groom’s cake under her pillow, she would dream of the man she would marry.
Today, most grooms cake are either rich or sinfully chocolate, or a basic design that recognizes the groom (occupation, hobby, favorite sport etc).
